Export ChatGPT Conversations to Word (2026)
ChatGPT conversations have no direct Word export (Canvas documents are a separate case with their own .docx download). For the conversation itself, here are the three routes that actually work.
Updated August 2026 · works with ChatGPT (chatgpt.com), Claude (claude.ai), and Gemini (gemini.google.com).
The honest starting point
For the conversation itself, neither ChatGPT nor exporter extensions (ours included) produce a .docx — ChatGPT's Canvas documents are the one exception, with their own .docx download that covers the document, not the chat. Anyone promising a one-click Word button is glossing over a conversion step. Here are the three routes that actually work, and when to use each.
Route 1 — Clean Markdown → Pandoc → .docx (best for editing)
- Export the conversation as clean Markdown. AI Chat Exporter does it in one click — headings, lists, code, and tables intact, processed locally in your browser.
- Convert with Pandoc (free, cross-platform):
pandoc chat.md -o chat.docx - Open in Word. Headings arrive as Word heading styles; lists and tables come through as editable Word elements (exact formatting can vary).
Route 2 — Clean PDF (best for sharing as-is)
If the document is for reading — a client, a teacher, a record — skip Word entirely. A clean PDF of the conversation generally preserves the exported layout, with no conversion step. The same extension exports one per click.
Route 3 — Copy-paste into Word (fine for short chats)
Paste works for a few messages, but on long conversations Word inherits messy formatting from the page: inconsistent fonts, broken code blocks, tables that arrive as tab soup. Budget cleanup time, or use Route 1.
Which route for which job?
- Editable report or draft → Route 1 (Markdown → Pandoc).
- Read-only sharing → Route 2 (PDF).
- A paragraph or two → Route 3 (paste).
The clean halves of every route, one click.

Can ChatGPT export to Word (.docx) directly?
Not for conversations — Canvas documents have their own .docx download, but the chat itself doesn't. The working paths are a clean PDF, or clean Markdown converted with Pandoc, or careful copy-paste.
What's the cleanest route to an editable Word doc?
Clean Markdown converted with Pandoc: pandoc chat.md -o chat.docx. Headings map to Word heading styles; lists and tables arrive as editable elements, though formatting may vary.
When is PDF the better choice?
When the document is for reading or sharing rather than editing — no conversion step, and the exported layout is generally preserved.
