AI Chat Backup (2026)
Months of prompts, decisions, and drafts live inside three chat apps that were never designed as archives. A backup is simpler than it sounds: files you hold, where your notes live.
Updated August 2026 · one extension covers ChatGPT (chatgpt.com), Claude (claude.ai), and Gemini (gemini.google.com).
Why history isn't a backup
Chat history is a record in the app's database — shaped by account settings, retention rules, sync hiccups, and buttons you can press by accident. It usually holds. But "usually holds" is not what you want protecting three months of working notes. A backup is different: a file you hold, unaffected by account state or platform changes. (If your history already looks wrong, start with the missing-history checks.)
The two-layer backup that actually gets done
- Bulk layer, occasionally. Each platform offers an official account data export — run it every month or two as a safety net. The catch: they produce bulk archives, not readable per-conversation files.
- Per-conversation layer, the moment it matters. When a chat produces something valuable, export just that conversation as Markdown or PDF right then, into your notes folder, vault, or drive. This is the layer people skip — and often the one you end up needing.
Official bulk exports, per platform
| Platform | Bulk route | Details |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Settings → Data controls → Export data | How it behaves & fixes |
| Claude | Account data export (emailed download link) | Claude export guide |
| Gemini | Google Takeout (retained activity) | Gemini export guide |
The per-conversation layer, in one click
AI Chat Exporter adds the missing button to all three chat apps: open the conversation, click, and save clean Markdown, a PDF, or an Obsidian note. Conversation content is processed locally in your browser and not uploaded by the extension. Same flow on ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini — one habit covers all three.

How do I back up my AI chats?
Official bulk export occasionally + one-click per-conversation exports for what matters, saved with your notes.
One extension for all three apps?
Yes — same click on chatgpt.com, claude.ai, and gemini.google.com. Local processing, nothing uploaded by the extension.
Why not just trust history?
History is the app's database record, governed by settings and retention you don't fully control. A backup is a file you hold.
