ChatGPT to Markdown Converter (2026)
The converter-site routine — copy the chat, paste it somewhere, hope the code blocks survive — exists because chat apps lack an export button. The cleaner fix adds the button instead.
Updated August 2026 · works with ChatGPT (chatgpt.com), Claude (claude.ai), and Gemini (gemini.google.com).
Why paste-and-convert disappoints
- Structure mangling. Copying from the chat page flattens formatting before the converter even sees it — code fences, nested lists, and who-said-what tend to arrive broken.
- Your content on someone's server. Pasting a conversation into a converter site hands that content to the site. For work chats, that's a real consideration.
- One chat at a time, forever. The routine never gets faster.
The direct route: read it where it lives
- Install the free extension. AI Chat Exporter reads the conversation's actual structure on the page — no copying, no paste.
- Click the icon on any open conversation.
- Get clean Markdown — copied to clipboard or saved as a .md file, with speaker labels, headings, and fenced code intact. Processed locally in your browser; nothing is uploaded by the extension.
Converting conversations.json from the official export
If you ran ChatGPT's official bulk export, your history arrives as structured data — turning that into readable per-conversation Markdown takes scripting or dedicated tooling. That route makes sense for archiving everything. If what you actually want is a handful of specific chats as .md files, opening each one and exporting it directly is far less work. (Bulk export behavior and fixes: here.)
What the Markdown is good for
Clean .md moves anywhere: Obsidian, Notion, Google Docs, a git repo, or straight into another model as context.

Is there a ChatGPT-to-Markdown converter?
Converter sites exist, but reading the conversation in place can produce cleaner Markdown (no copy-paste flattening) and keeps content on your machine.
Why not paste into an online converter?
Structure breaks in the copy step, and your conversation lands on a third-party server.
What about conversations.json?
That's the bulk-archive route — right for everything, heavy for a few specific chats.
